Dear Restless DaughtersOf The Covenant
Dear restless daughters of the covenant,
No one can remain “Daddy’s little girl” forever (except in Daddy’s mind!). Girls grow up and one of the greatest joys of parenthood is watching them become the women God created them to be.
Between these two phases of maturity, however, lies a period of time that can feel somewhat awkward (i.e., you feel more like a woman than a girl, but you are still living under your parents’ authority at home).
Feelings of restlessness during this time are completely normal, but you must also guard your heart against discontentment, impatience, and wanderlust.
The world, the flesh, and the devil will tell you otherwise. Their joint testimony will be, “Just leave home as soon as possible! With or without your parents blessing! You have a life to live, so go live it!” Your deceitful and desperately wicked heart will tend to agree.
Before making that weighty of a decision, I would encourage you to engage in a prayerful season of Bible study. Meditate upon (perhaps even memorize) the Bible verses below. They address topics like domestic order, parental authority, and feminine maturity. They also warn of very serious dangers.
Allow these verses to renew your mind, examine your heart, and illumine your path as you begin making plans for the future. If you don’t understand these passages, ask your father to explain. If you don’t agree with them, ask the Holy Spirit to change your mind.
Becoming a woman is part of God’s good plan for your life and the holy scriptures are sufficient to guide you safely into this next stage of maturity.
In brotherly love,
Pastor Christian McShaffrey
So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them. And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply…
And the Lord God said, It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him an help meet for him.
Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and thy conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.
Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
And if a man sell his daughter to be a maidservant, she shall not go out as the menservants do. If she please not her master, who hath betrothed her to himself, then shall he let her be redeemed: to sell her unto a strange nation he shall have no power, seeing he hath dealt deceitfully with her.
And he that curseth his father, or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father, and keep my sabbaths: I am the Lord your God.
If a woman also vow a vow unto the Lord, and bind herself by a bond, being in her father’s house in her youth… But if her father disallow her in the day that he heareth; not any of her vows, or of her bonds wherewith she hath bound her soul, shall stand: and the Lord shall forgive her, because her father disallowed her.
Honour thy father and thy mother, as the Lord thy God hath commanded thee; that thy days may be prolonged, and that it may go well with thee, in the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee.
Except the Lord build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the Lord keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain.
Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.
Where no counsel is, the people fall: but in the multitude of counsellors there is safety.
The way of a fool is right in his own eyes: but he that hearkeneth unto counsel is wise.
Without counsel purposes are disappointed: but in the multitude of counsellors they are established.
Through desire a man, having separated himself, seeketh and intermeddleth with all wisdom.
There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the Lord, that shall stand.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
The eye that mocketh at his father, and despiseth to obey his mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, and the young eagles shall eat it.
Moreover the Lord saith, Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet: therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the Lord will discover their secret parts.
The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?
For God commanded, saying, Honour thy father and mother: and, He that curseth father or mother, let him die the death.
And he went down with them, and came to Nazareth, and was subject unto them… And Jesus increased in wisdom and stature, and in favour with God and man.
And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a reprobate mind, to do those things which are not convenient… backbiters, haters of God, despiteful, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents.
1 Corinthians 7:36-38
But if any man think that he behaveth himself uncomely toward his virgin, if she pass the flower of her age, and need so require, let him do what he will, he sinneth not: let them marry. Nevertheless he that standeth stedfast in his heart, having no necessity, but hath power over his own will, and hath so decreed in his heart that he will keep his virgin, doeth well. So then he that giveth her in marriage doeth well; but he that giveth her not in marriage doeth better.
1 Corinthians 11:8-10
For the man is not of the woman; but the woman of the man. Neither was the man created for the woman; but the woman for the man. For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
2 Corinthians 11:3
But I fear, lest by any means, as the serpent beguiled Eve through his subtilty, so your minds should be corrupted from the simplicity that is in Christ.
Children, obey your parents in the Lord: for this is right. Honour thy father and mother; (which is the first commandment with promise;) that it may be well with thee, and thou mayest live long on the earth.
Children, obey your parents in all things: for this is well pleasing unto the Lord.
1 Timothy 2:9-10
In like manner also, that women adorn themselves in modest apparel, with shamefacedness and sobriety; not with broided hair, or gold, or pearls, or costly array; but (which becometh women professing godliness) with good works.
1 Timothy 2:13-15
For Adam was first formed, then Eve. And Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Notwithstanding she shall be saved in childbearing, if they continue in faith and charity and holiness with sobriety.
2 Timothy 3:2
This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents…
That they [the older women] may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.
Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.
1 Peter 5:5
Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble.
