“He ascended into heaven, and sitteth at the right hand of God the Father Almighty”
In this article of the creed, we confess the ascension and session of Jesus, the Son of God.
The ascension of Christ is recorded at the end of two Gospels (Mark and Luke), as well at the beginning of the Book of Acts. This event marked the end of his earthly ministry and beginning of his heavenly reign. This reign, we refer to as Christ’s “session” at the right hand of his Father.
In ancient times, the phrase “right hand” indicated a position of royal privilege and authority. This was Christ’s due reward for such perfect obedience to the Father and for so spoiling the powers of hell. All the hosts of heaven now fall on their faces before him.
Christ’s reign also has implications for those on earth. We who believe benefit from it by knowing that our sovereign Lord is presently subduing us, and all things, to himself. Even his enemies shall soon be subjugated, becoming a stool for his feet.
Confess these truths today and you will find much comfort during these uncertain times. All authority in heaven and on earth now belongs to your Saviour. This truth should also embolden us corporately, as the Church, as we continue to teach the nations to obey whatsoever things our risen and reigning King has commanded.
